Sauna Culture in Estonia

For Estonians, sauna is something far deeper than a hot room.

In Estonian, the word löyly describes the steam that rises when water meets heated stone. But löyly is more than steam — it is the spirit of the sauna. The moment the air transforms, the heat deepens, and the world outside ceases to exist. For centuries, this has been a space of cleansing — not just of the body, but of the mind. Something almost sacred in its simplicity.

My childhood memories are inseparably connected to sauna. Whenever we visited my great-grandparents or other close relatives, sauna was always heated. Larger family gatherings almost always ended with a sauna evening.

Sauna brought people together. Estonians are generally quite reserved, yet deeply family-oriented. Sauna is the place where this reserve disappears. It is a space where people open up.

The Saturday evening sauna is an established ritual in many households. In our family, sauna takes place at least every Saturday, often even twice a week. When we go to sauna together, we are truly present with one another. It is quality time.

Löyly — the spirit of the sauna

"Sauna creates an atmosphere where people become more open and sincere. Although Estonians are not typically described as spiritual, sauna undeniably has a spiritual dimension for us. It is a ritual."

From Culture to Craft

Our journey into sauna production began in a very practical way.

We previously operated a production facility that manufactured log houses. Over time, market conditions changed. Sauna production emerged as a natural option — saunas were, and still are, highly popular in Europe. Our first saunas were sold to Finland.

Initially, we built saunas from regular spruce. However, we learned very quickly that ordinary spruce is not suitable for barrel saunas. This realization came after our very first sauna.

From that moment on, we switched entirely to thermowood, despite its higher cost and our limited financial resources at the time. This was a principled decision. Quality has always been non-negotiable for us.

We also made a conscious decision not to offer thermowood as an optional upgrade simply to keep the initial price lower. If we know a material or solution is not suitable, we do not offer it at all. The löyly demands honesty — in the heat, in the materials, in the way we build.

"Quality has always been non-negotiable for us."

The Birth of Moodem

Born from a problem.
Perfected through principle.

The idea for MOODEM was born out of a problem. Export markets increasingly demanded flat-packed sauna kits. As a manufacturer, I knew that approximately 70% of a barrel sauna's final quality depends on assembly. I was skeptical from the beginning.

That skepticism proved justified. Despite good manuals and quality components, assembly was complex. The initial emotional experience was often not the one we believe should come with our product.

Eventually, I decided we needed a fundamentally new solution. I sat down at my design workstation and began developing a construction system that would be genuinely easy to assemble. This is how MOODEM was born — a sauna that preserves the spirit of löyly from the factory floor to the first evening it is heated.

Our Philosophy

Built for those
who know the difference.

Sauna should not be about colored lights or complex heating technology. Sauna should be simple, calm, and authentic. The löyly should be the only thing that fills the room.

If MOODEM can offer people a place to pause, release tension, and simply be — alone, with family, or with friends — then we have done our work well.
