Close-up of thermally modified spruce — the grain and warmth of real thermowood

The Craft

What goes into a Moodem.
And why it matters.

The Wood

Most saunas use 20mm panels.
Ours are 40mm. Twice the thickness.

That is the difference between a wall that holds heat and a wall that leaks it. You feel it the moment you sit down.

Every Moodem is built from thermally modified spruce — thermowood. The process is simple in principle and unforgiving in practice: raw spruce is heated to extreme temperatures using only steam. No chemicals. No coatings. No synthetic treatments. Just heat and time.

What emerges is fundamentally different from the wood that went in. The thermal process alters the cellular structure of the timber. Resins are cooked out — the same resins that would otherwise bleed onto your bench at high temperatures, leaving sticky residue on skin and surfaces. What remains is dimensionally stable wood that no longer reacts to humidity. It does not swell. It does not shrink. It does not move the way untreated wood does.

In a sauna — where temperature swings from ambient to 180°F and moisture levels shift with every löyly — this stability is not a luxury. It is a requirement.

Thermal modification is unforgiving.
It exposes every flaw.

Low-grade timber warps, twists, and cracks under the heat of the process. Defects that might be invisible in raw wood become amplified — making the material unusable. Only select-grade spruce survives thermal modification intact. That is not a marketing claim. It is physics.

The result is wood that is significantly more resistant to rot, mold, and pests. Wood that holds heat longer, releases it more evenly, and maintains its form year after year. When you are sitting in 180° heat and your pores are wide open, what is in the walls matters. Ours have nothing in them that should not be there.

Real Heat

The science is not ambiguous.
Temperature matters.

Researchers at the University of Eastern Finland followed over 2,300 men for two decades. The finding was simple: those who used a traditional sauna four or more times per week — at real temperatures, 175°F and above — had dramatically lower rates of cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and all-cause mortality. Not marginally lower. Dramatically.

Cardiovascular Health

Frequent sauna use at 175°F+ is linked to a 50% lower risk of fatal cardiovascular disease and a 63% lower risk of sudden cardiac death — compared to once-weekly use. The high heat drives heart rate to 120–150 bpm, mimicking moderate aerobic exercise. It strengthens the heart muscle without the joint impact of running. Over time, regular sessions improve vascular compliance — the flexibility of your blood vessels — which naturally lowers resting blood pressure.

Brain Health

The same study found that frequent users showed a 66% lower risk of dementia and a 65% lower risk of Alzheimer's disease. Heat stress increases Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor — a protein that repairs brain cells and encourages the growth of new neurons. This is not speculation. It is measured, published, peer-reviewed science.

Longevity

High-frequency sauna users have a 40% lower risk of death from any cause. At 175°F+, the body produces heat shock proteins — cellular bodyguards that repair misfolded proteins linked to aging and disease. Heat exposure also activates the FOXO3 gene, associated with DNA repair and tumor suppression. The body's response to real heat is not comfort. It is repair.

Physical Performance

Intense sauna sessions can cause temporary growth hormone spikes of 200–500%, aiding muscle repair and fat metabolism. Regular heat acclimation increases plasma volume — more blood to carry oxygen — which can improve athletic endurance by up to 30%. It also significantly lowers C-reactive protein, a primary marker of systemic inflammation.

The distinction that matters.

These benefits were documented in traditional Finnish-style saunas operating between 175°F and 200°F with low humidity. Not infrared panels. Not steam rooms. Not heated yoga studios. The temperature is not a preference — it is the threshold where the body's repair mechanisms activate. Below it, you are warm. Above it, you are healing.

The Build

Every panel locks into the next.
No gaps. No air leaks. No thermal bridges.

The cabin holds heat the way a vault holds pressure — sealed tight, nothing escaping. This is achieved through a double tongue-and-groove joint system. Each 40mm thermowood panel interlocks with the next at two points, creating a weather-resistant seal that eliminates air infiltration and thermal bridging.

Full insulation covers every surface — floor, walls, and ceiling. There are no cold spots. No areas where heat dissipates faster than others. The result is consistent, enveloping warmth that holds the löyly exactly where it belongs: around you.

Where thermowood naturally contains larger knots, we fill them with a specially formulated thermo wood filler. This ensures a uniform finish across every surface and adds an additional layer of structural integrity. Nothing is left to chance. Nothing is cosmetic. Everything performs.

Full Insulation

Floor. Walls. Ceiling. Every surface engineered for heat retention. No cold spots. No energy waste. Consistent temperature from corner to corner.

Factory Pre-Finished

Pre-oiled. Pre-mounted. Hardware installed. Every Moodem leaves the factory ready — not as a kit that hopes for the best, but as a precision product.

Knot Treatment

Natural knots filled with specialized thermo wood filler for uniform finish and added durability. Every surface is considered. Every detail is resolved.

The Ritual

You do not use a sauna.
You enter one.

The door closes. The world outside — the noise, the notifications, the decisions that never stop — stays on the other side. What remains is heat, wood, stone, and silence.

The first minutes are adjustment. Your skin registers the temperature. Your breathing slows without you deciding to slow it. The bench beneath you is warm — not from a heating element, but from hours of radiant heat absorbed into 40mm of thermowood. It holds you the way the earth holds warmth after a long summer day.

Then comes the löyly. Water meets stone. The air transforms — thicker, deeper, alive. The temperature does not just rise. It envelops. This is the moment your body stops performing and starts recovering. Heart rate climbs to 120, then 140. Blood vessels dilate. Heat shock proteins mobilize. The repair mechanisms that lay dormant under the weight of daily stress activate — quietly, powerfully, without you doing anything at all.

There is no screen to check. No setting to adjust. No program to select. There is only heat, and your response to it. Fifteen minutes pass. Maybe twenty. Time behaves differently here.

When you step out, the cold air hits like a reset button pressed at the cellular level. Your skin tightens. Your mind clears. Not the artificial clarity of caffeine or the forced calm of meditation apps — something older and more honest. The kind of clarity that comes from subjecting yourself to something real and emerging on the other side.

This is not wellness. This is not a trend. This is what human beings have done for thousands of years to stay grounded, stay sharp, and stay alive. Moodem simply builds the space where it happens — the way it was always meant to happen.

The Next Step

Now you understand what goes into it.

One conversation. That is where every Moodem begins.
